The European Union is planning to impose curbs on certain foodstuffs made in different standards in order to protect its farmers, a decision which echoes US President Donald Trump’s recently imposed reciprocal trade tariff, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.
The European Commission has reportedly said that it would agree to a greater import limit next week, according to three officials quoted by Financial Times, which raises tensions in the trading circle.
Report suggests that early targets by the EU could include US crops like that of soybean which are grown with the help of pesticides but the EU farmers are restricted to use those pesticides.
“We have very clear signals from the parliament, very clear signals also from the member states and from our farmers: whatever is banned in the EU, it should be banned in the EU, even if it is an imported product,” European Commission’s health commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said in an interview in January.
US President Trump imposed reciprocal trade tariffs and criticised countries that blocked US products, including the EU which he said barred shellfish from 48 of the US’s 50 states.
