US President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at Republican senators who voted for the war powers resolution that would limit his ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela.

Democrats and five Republicans voted to advance the war powers resolution on a 52-47 vote tally and ensure a later vote for final passage.

“Republicans should be ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

He called out Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, Josh Hawley, and Todd Young, who supported the resolution and said they “should never be elected to office again.”

According to Trump, the Senate vote greatly hampers American self-defence and impedes the President’s authority as Commander in Chief.

‘War Powers Resolution is unconstitutional’

He, however, noted that despite ‘their stupidity’, the War Powers Resolution, a Vietnam-era law that is aimed at limiting a President’s power to commit troops to conflict without Congressional approval, was unconstitutional.

“A more important Senate Vote will be taking place next week on this very subject,” Trump said.

Senate vote to stop more attacks against Venezuela

Earlier, the US Senate had advanced the resolution that would limit Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela, sounding a note of disapproval for his expanding ambitions in the Western Hemisphere.

While top Republican lawmakers are firmly backing the Trump administration’s arrest of Venezuela’s president and assertions of control over the South American nation’s oil industry, some GOP senators are drawing the line on more attacks without the approval of Congress.
