Trump suggests Europe is fizzling while US blooms: During his address at WEF 2026, Trump repeatedly derided his European allies and argued that the US economy is strong and that Washington is blooming in contrast to Europe which is “not heading in right direction”. The US president added that America “takes great care” about the people of Europe and mentioned his Scottish and German heritage within family. “I want to see Europe go good, but it’s not heading in the right direction. We want strong allies, not seriously weakened ones,” said Trump.
Kristalina Georgieva, the head of the International Monetary Fund, has said that Artificial intelligence is going to be a “tsunami hitting the labour market.” She said IMF research suggests 60% of jobs in advanced economies will be affected by AI, either “enhanced, eliminated or transformed” in the coming years, and 40% globally.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, leaders of two countries that have benefited from the so-called “rules-based order” gave the world starkly different frames of its demise. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, made an unflinching assessment of the current moment, which he described as one not of transition but of rupture. While recognising the hard realities presented by America’s unilateralism, Carney suggested a possible roadmap for middle powers.
US President Donald Trump Thursday said he has withdrawn an invitation for Canada to join his proposed Board of Peace, an initiative he says is aimed at resolving global conflicts.
Trump announced the decision in a post on his Truth Social platform addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump formally rolled out the Board of Peace earlier this week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where world leaders gathered for the signing of its charter. Trump has said he will serve as chairman of the body.
The president of Somaliland was at the World Economic Forum this week to win international recognition for his country and pitch investment opportunities in the East African nation.
One of his main meetings, according to an aide, was with Eric Trump, son of the US president Donald Trump and a leading executive of the Trump family's sprawling business spanning from real estate to crypto.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said he knew no concrete details about the agreement Trump cited for Arctic security.
“I don’t know what there is in the agreement, or the deal about my country,” Nielsen told reporters, calling Greenland’s sovereignty a “red line.”
During his speech, the Ukrainian President criticized European leaders for failing to act on the continent’s security. Zelenskyy also compared the European behaviour on the ongoing war in Ukraine to what is happening around Greenland recently.
According to Zelenskyy, Russian warships were sailing freely around Greenland, and he offered Ukraine’s expertise and weapons “to ensure not one of those ships remains.”
Elon Musk said the goal of his companies is to “maximize the probability that civilization has a great future.” He kicked off his Davos address with a high-level overview of his companies, talking about robotics, artificial intelligence, sustainable technology and making life “multiplanetary.”
Musk also predicted that robots would transform society and would help humanity by reducing the need for human work.
“There will be such an abundance of goods and services because,” he said. “There’ll be more robots than people.”
Musk also criticised Donald Trump’s trade policy.
“Unfortunately, in the US, the tariff barriers for solar (panels) are extremely high,” Musk said.
“And that makes the economics of deploying solar artificially high, because China makes almost all the solar and the tech,” he said.
“We’re gonna make this interesting,” Elon Musk, who has previously criticised the World Economic Forum, said as he made his debut in Davos. Musk’s session was billed as “a conversation” moderated by the forum’s interim co-chair.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called out European leaders on their inaction when it comes to the war in Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, Europe is too reliant on the US for its security.
“Europe needs united armed forces, forces that can truly defend Europe today,” he said.
Zelenskyy has called his meeting with Trump “productive and substantive”. The Ukrainian president said on X that he and Trump spoke about air defence for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also wrote that he thanked Trump for the previous package of air defence missiles, while asking for an additional one.
“Our previous meeting with President Trump helped strengthen the protection of our skies, and I hope that this time we will reinforce it further as well,” he said.
Trump has left Davos after attending the World Economic Forum. According to The Associated Press, bad weather kept his helicopter grounded, meaning he faces a drive from the mountain town to Air Force One that could take as long as two hours.
Donald Trump said that he had a good meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy but that there’s still “a ways to go” toward ending the war with Russia.
“The war has to end,” he said after the meeting with Zelenskyy in Davos. “We hope it’s going to end. There are a lot of people being killed.”

President Trump says "59 countries" are involved in the historic Board of Peace mission, which aims to end the conflict in Gaza and force Hamas to give up its weapons.

The situation in NATO is difficult due to the crisis over Greenland, but western allies must remember their common adversary is Russia, which is increasing its military presence in the Arctic, Norway's defence minister said on Wednesday.
"These are demanding times. The situation in NATO is difficult," Tore Sandvik told a meeting with foreign correspondents in Oslo.
"The dimensional threat for the West, for NATO, (for) all members of NATO, still is Russia," he said. Sandvik was speaking as the Western military alliance is fraying under the pressure of US President Donald Trump's relentless push to acquire Greenland from fellow NATO ally Denmark.
