Conservative leader Friedrich Merz is all set to be sworn-in as Germany’s new chancellor as the parliament is expected to back the Merz led coalition government in Tuesday’s vote, ending six months of political stalemate in Berlin.

Lawmakers are expected to vote in the lower house of parliament for Merz to be the new chancellor of the country as his conservative party CDU/CSU, which won the election in February, was able to secure a coalition agreement with the centre-left Social Democrats.

As Merz is set to lead Germany, the pressure would be on him and his CDU/CSU to show leadership as Berlin was left in a political vacuum last November when SPD party’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-way coalition collapsed while Europe faced several crises.

“It’s our historical duty to make this government a success,” said CDU leader Friedrich Merz while officially signing the coalition agreement on Monday.

In the election held in February, CDU/CSU secured 208 seats, while the AfD won 152 seats. Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz led SPD won 120 seats, Greens achieved 85 seats, Left garnered 64 while the SSW had one seat.

Mark Helfrich, a CDU member of the Bundestag said “I think we really need to prove that we solve the problems, not in a radical way, just in a very responsible, visible, detailed way,” BBC reported.
