OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude AI and Elon Musk-owned X’s Grok are down for several users globally, according to the real-time outage monitoring website Downdetector. The report further added that some users also faced issues with Google Gemini.

More than 43,000 users had reported issues with ChatGPT across the platform, including its website and app around 8 pm (IST) on Thursday, Downdetector showed.
Why is ChatGPT down?
Acknowledging the problem, OpenAI on its website said, “Elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex. We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.”
Visitors to OpenAI’s chatbot said that they observed an array of strange behaviour, including the ChatGPT’s site not opening and attempting to download an unusual file, The Independent reported. OpenAI’s statement clarified that the issue was also affecting Codex, OpenAI’s tool to use ChatGPT for programming.
According to tech website 9to5 Google, all three artificial intelligence bots, ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok’s underlying issue could be linked to Microsoft Azure, which is also seeing a spike in outage reports. The rationale behind the linkage is that all three bots rely on Microsoft Azure for cloud services.
However, Google’s Gemini at the same time was opening fine but user reports on Downdetector showed problems with the chatbot.
The disruption also appeared to impact Amazon Web Services (AWS). According to data from Downdetector, reports of outages began surging in the evening as per Indian time zone, with users flagging issues ranging from total website inaccessibility to internal server errors when attempting to generate AI responses, PTI reported.

Why is Claude AI down?
Claude AI’s parent company Anthropic said it has identified the cause of elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5 and is working on a fix.
It later updated that the only affected models remaining are Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Rest of the models have recovered to the baseline error rate.
