Canada student work rules 2026: Canada continues to attract a large number of international students, including Indians, every year, but over the past year, the government has tightened and clarified the rules around student employment. The changes come as Ottawa looks to ensure that education, not work, remains the primary purpose of a study permit, amid concerns about academic performance and pressure on local job markets.

Who is allowed to work while studying in Canada?

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), international students can work in Canada without a separate work permit, but only if they meet certain conditions.

To be eligible, students must have a valid study permit and be enrolled full-time at a designated learning institution (DLI). Their course must lead to a degree, diploma or certificate, run for at least six months, and they must have already begun their academic programme. The study permit must also clearly mention that the student is allowed to work.
