The Canadian High Commissioner Thursday condemned an event that took place in Canada’s Brampton which purportedly celebrated former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
Cameron MacKay, the High Commissioner for Canada in India, took to Twitter to state that there is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. “I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities,” he wrote.
The diplomat’s statement comes after a video shared on Twitter showed a tableau in a Brampton parade that showed Gandhi wearing a blood-stained white saree, with her hands up as turban-clad men pointed guns at her. A poster behind the scene reads: ‘Revenge’.
The unverified video was shared by Balraj Deol who said that the float was part of a 5 km-long parade in the Canadian city on June 4. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in the aftermath of Operation Bluestar, whose 39th anniversary was celebrated earlier this week.
