Clashes between groups of men in east London's Whitechapel district on Thursday night were linked to ongoing protests in Bangladesh, according to police.
The unrest involved two large groups fighting in the streets, with police intervening to separate them. The area, known for its curry houses and large ethnic Bangladeshi population, saw a wider demonstration involving several hundred people.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway acknowledged the impact of events in Bangladesh on local communities but emphasized that "strength of feeling" must not escalate into threats, violence, and disorder. The incident resulted in damaged cars, injured officers, and one arrest for a public order offense.
Footage on social media showed men throwing projectiles and attacking a building's gates. This violence follows deadly clashes in Bangladesh, where dozens have been killed in protests sparked by student anger over job quotas, as reported by Reuters.
