(PTI Photo)Bangladesh Protests Today News Highlights: The funeral of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi was held in Bangladesh Saturday, drawing a crowd amid extra-tight security after his death triggered unrest across the country. Interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus along with his advisory council members and Army chief General Waker-uz-Zaman attended the funeral for the 32-year-old spokesperson of ‘Inqilab Mancha’ held at the South Plaza of Parliament complex at Manik Mia Avenue.
State mourning: Muhammad Yunus spoke ahead of the funeral prayers as politicians representing former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami and student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) joined the prayers. The country is also observing a day of state mourning following the death of Hadi, who was one of the prominent leaders of the student-led protests last year, which led to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Protests erupt in Dhaka: Hadi was a critic of Hasina and opposed Indian views. He protested Hasina’s close ties with India and its leaders. Following his death, the Chattogram home of India’s Assistant High Commissioner to Bangladesh was attacked. Apart from that at least three instances of late-night arson were recorded in Dhaka — the offices of newspapers Prothom Alo and Daily Star and the home of former minister in the Hasina government, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, were set on fire.
