Two popular Southern California beaches briefly closed after a shark aggressively bumped a surfer’s board.

A dispatcher with Newport Beach Fire and Lifeguard Operations says the shark lifted the surfboard out of the water Thursday afternoon in Huntington State Beach.

Dispatcher Mark Herman says the shark’s behavior is considered aggressive, and the beach 1 mile (1.6 kilometer) in each direction was immediately closed. Dispatcher Avery Wickham says the beaches reopened Friday morning.
