US President Donald Trump revoked security clearances for several prominent Democratic figures on Friday, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, reported Reuters. The decision is Trump’s latest action against his political opponents.
“I have determined that it is no longer in the national interest for the following individuals to access classified information,” Trump stated in a memorandum issued late Friday. The list also includes former Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The memorandum was issued just hours after Trump arrived at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf property for the weekend.
Trump’s decision also affects several other notable figures, including Republican former Representative Liz Cheney, former Biden White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, and Fiona Hill, a Russia expert who previously served on Trump’s National Security Council.
Among those impacted are Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer in Washington who represents whistleblowers, and Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican lawmaker known for his criticism of Trump.
The move also extends to former President Joe Biden, who previously had his security clearance revoked, effectively denying the former president access to US intelligence briefings. Traditionally, former US presidents receive intelligence updates to provide counsel on national security and foreign policy matters.
In 2021, then-President Biden revoked Trump’s security clearance after his departure from office, setting a precedent for the current situation.
