Crowned as the Miss World 2017, Manushi Chhillar from India won the international pageant. Clinching the title 17 years after Priyanka Chopra won it in 2000, the 20-year-old made the nation proud on the global platform for the sixth time. Born to doctor parents in Haryana on May 14, 1997, she was all set to be a cardiac surgeon. But, destiny had chalked out a different plan for her. The 54th titleholder competed with 29 other contestants and won Femina Miss India 2017 on June 25.
Chhillar studied at St Thomas’ School in New Delhi, and is pursuing a medical degree at the Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women in Sonipat. While her father is a scientist, her mother is an associate professor and department head of neurochemistry. Chhillar is engaged to her family friend, Ishant Nayyar.
Not just medicine, but she is also passionate about paragliding, bungee jumping, snorkelling and scuba diving. She is also a trained Indian classical dancer and enjoys sketching and painting in her free time. Her motto in life is ‘When you cease to dream you cease to live.’
Spreading awareness about the important issue of menstrual hygiene, Chhillar began an initiative called Project Shakti for her Beauty with a Purpose project. She visited about 20 villages, and made a difference to the lives of 5,000 women under the project.
