While north and northwest India are scorching under heatwaves, northeastern states reeled under heavy rainfall triggered by remnants of cyclone Remal.
Relief from soaring temperatures may be just a short while away for the northern states, as monsoon prepares to advance over southern India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to advance into parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, Lakshadweep, Kerala and parts of the Bay of Bengal and Northeastern states in the next 2-3 days.
Heat Wave Warning
Just a day after Delhi hit its highest temperature in four years, the IMD noted that many areas in Northwest, West, Central, and East India are experiencing temperatures over 40°C. Severe heatwave conditions are expected in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha on Wednesday.
However, heat wave conditions are expected to gradually reduce over Northwest and Central India from May 30. Hot and humid weather is expected in isolated pockets of Gujarat on May 29, while warm night conditions are anticipated in parts of Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from May 30 to June 2.
Cyclone ‘Remal’
The remnants of Cyclonic Storm “Remal” have weakened into a low-pressure area over northeast Assam and its neighborhood. The associated cyclonic circulation extends to mid-tropospheric levels, influencing the weather patterns in the region.
Rain Forecast
Fairly light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is forecasted for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim for the next seven days. These areas may also experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 29-30.
IMD also alerts light to moderate rainfall over Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha for the next five days, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds expected on May 31 and June 1.
