— Ujjain, also known as old Ujjayini, was an important Avanti urban center with access to significant transit and commercial routes. Its location aided its growth as a hub for business, culture, and religious traditions.

— The Vaishya Tekri stupa is linked to the Mauryan period and Ashoka, emphasising the importance of state support and the Mauryan political network in the development of Buddhism. The fresh excavation is interesting because it may yield additional information about the Buddhist landscape of ancient Ujjain.

— Ujjain’s value was not solely religious. Its location inside historic networks of mobility enabled religious ideas to travel with merchants, priests, and other groups.

Trade and Buddhism

— Trade networks enabled Buddhism’s worldwide growth. According to the Indian Express, ancient trade routes transported ideas, beliefs, and cultural practices across regions in addition to commodities.

— Amaravati serves as a particularly good illustration of this. According to a recent Indian Express account of Buddhism’s southern spread, Ashokan inscriptions in Karnataka and Andhra show that Mauryan Buddhism reached the southern plateau by the third century BCE. In Sanchi and Sarnath, Ashokan patronage formed an integral aspect of the Buddhist architectural and cultural scene.

— However, Buddhism’s spread was not entirely a royal project. Bhattiprolu evidence shows gifts made by local guilds, whereas Amaravati’s development demonstrates the importance of traders, craftsmen, and monks.

— Buddhism’s spread was thus the result of numerous interacting forces, rather than royal support alone. Political power, developing urban centers, commerce networks, guilds, and monastic organisations all contributed to a favourable atmosphere for religious dispersion.
