On the serene banks of picturesque Dal Lake, a group of young men are eyeing to host Asia’s longest Iftar spread, which will take place on Saturday evening.
If all goes according to plan, the dining spread for the dusk meal (Iftaar) will surpass Asia’s longest Iftar table, measuring 1.03 kilometers laid out in an event named the “Joy of Giving” near Al Noor Mosque in Sharjah two years ago.

The organizers say that this is an open-to-all event that aims to celebrate the holy month of Ramzan. “We are organizing this event to celebrate the holy month of Ramazan,” said Chief Executive Officer of an event management company Ahmer Khan.
The organizing team has stitched 1.6 kilometers long dining spread and arranged 150 carpets to cover the stretch on the Dal banks. “The guests will sit on the carpets and will be served chicken biryani along with fruits, dates, juice,’’ he said.
The organizers are expecting that more than 3,000 people will be joining the iftar meal. The organizers so far have received a good response for this event. “Ramazan is celebrated as an Islamic festival in the Middle East; this is for the first time such an event is being hosted in Kashmir. We should encourage such initiatives,” said Director Tourism, Farooq Ahmad Shah.
People from different parts of the city are excited about the event. “It is a historical event, I have not seen such a celebration in Ramzan in the valley till now and I am excited to go there,” said Syed Misbah, a medico.
The World record for the largest Iftar, spreads at 4.3 kilometers. “To break the World Record is not possible but right now we can surely say that this will be Asia’s longest iftar spread,” said Khan.
The organizers have also invited the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Syed for the event but have not received any intimation whether he will attend the event or not. The organizers are also planning to send an entry to the Limca Book of World records.
