If I were to ask you to keep a track of the number of times a woman’s body appears, without any reason, in commercial, you would probably give up halfway. The examples are far too many.
Be it an advertisement that is trying to sell perfume for men, their apparels or even a food item, there is almost always a woman present, posing titillatingly and looking seductively at the camera.
Blame it on the male gaze but this objectification of women is not only blatant, it has also been practised and perpetuated by several reputed and celebrated brands. A video titled ‘We Are #WomenNotObjects’ critiques this and shows the absurdity of such advertisements.
Though the video is a year-old, it gains relevance when placed in the current context where countless women are sharing tales of sexual harassment with the hashtag #MeToo. The video ends with powerful lines where the women, collectively, entreat others to not talk to them that way.
