Thanks to George Orwell’s 1984, we may using the maxim ‘Big brother is watching you’ ever so often and quite loosely too, but with Indian roads and public spaces being fitted with more and more CCTV cameras, this phrase is not only becoming hard truth, but is also changing human behaviour – mostly for the better, and occasionally, hilariously so.
Take, for instance, this video that has gone viral on Facebook. Uploaded by a satire account Troll Anthammas on August 29, this CCTV footage of a man picking a biker’s pocket only to notice that he’s been caught on camera has been viewed a whopping 2.4 million times in less than two days. Now, we’re not sure whether this video was staged or is authentic, but it definitely presents a real possibility of reactions to CCTV cameras and why this country should start its own version of India’s Funniest Videos on television. This footage is apparently from Cam 4 on some Indian road, and the time stamp indicates that it was just shot on Friday, August 26, 2016.
The video shows a man waiting by the roadside with his motorbike with his wallet very prominently sticking out of the back pocket of his trousers. A passersby finds the lure of the peeping wallet a bit too much to ignore and casually – and quite deftly as well – picks his pocket. Now, instead of walking away confidently – this guy either hasn’t picked too many pockets to carry this off with flair and confidence or he just wants to see how his ‘victim’ reacts – the man keeps hovering around, looking here and there when he spots a camera.
What happens next will leave you rolling on the floor laughing!
