With all the debate and conversation about gender equality, it goes without saying that men and women are treated differently. While some acts are expected of men, the same are considered shameful when done by women. This curious paradox that the society tolerates and even promotes is what Priya Malik challenges in her powerful spoken poem, “Right To Pleasure”.
Malik, who was a wildcard entry in Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss Season 9, in the poem, lays out some definitions that men must be familiar with — consent and choice. She not only touches upon these topics but emphasises their importance from the perspective of a woman. “Dear men, ask us about our choices/Ask us about our consent,” she says. And finally she assures women that seeking pleasure from one own’s body should not be considered shameful or even clandestine.
