To commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel inaugurated a plaque in Rethondes (Oise), the city where the armistice was signed in 1918. After the ceremony, the two heads of state interacted with the public who had come to the event. They then met a 101-year-old woman who confused Merkel as Macron’s wife. Now, the video of the interaction is going viral.
In the footage released by the RTBF, the elderly woman is heard saying, “Mr. Macron, it’s not possible, a little good woman like me to shake hands with the President of the Republic, it’s fantastic.” She then turned to Merkel and asked, “You are Madame Macron.” Trying to clarify, Merkel is heard saying, “Ich bin die Kanzlerin von Deutschland (No, I am the Chancellor of Germany)”
When the woman looked bewildered, Merkel tried again in German, and then in French: “Je suis la chancelière Allemagne.” But it seemed that the woman failed to understand.
