A video showing vendors selling unauthorised water bottles on Gorakhpur- Lokamanyatilak Superfast Express (20104) has gone viral on social media. The footage has sparked outrage, with users criticising Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for alleged “corruption” within Indian Railways.
The undated video, shared by a journalist on X, captures a passenger confronting vendors over the sale of unauthenticated water bottles, even though the authorised ones are placed inside the AC compartment. As the video progresses, the passenger schools the vendors and also questions a pan masala seller entering the AC section. The pantry manager arrives at the scene, asking the passenger to stop recording.
The passenger further criticises the pantry manager, expressing dissatisfaction with the poor catering management. The video concludes abruptly.
Sharing the video, the journalist wrote, “A food and packaged water racket active on our trains, it seems. Local stuff being sold at a premium while railway Neer remains untouched. A young man has made this video, apparently on Kurla Express. Date of the incident is unclear, but @AshwiniVaishnaw-ji please look into this.”

With nearly three lakh views, the video evoked a backlash over the surge in such cases in Indian Railways. “Its happening for years in India..Everyone gets the cut money and public are taken for a ride. I am glad to see the fear in the eyes of these corrupt people,” a user wrote.
They know very well that the railway ministry will not give them a free run and they will be punished for sure,” another user commented. “Suspend the manager. This Bhaiyyas who get into railways have made catering third class with their lack of integrity,” a third user said.
In 2019, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested 1,371 individuals and confiscated over 69,294 bottles as part of “Operation Thirst,” a nationwide initiative aimed at cracking down on the sale of unauthorised packaged drinking water. The RPF stated that the operation was conducted at major railway stations across the country to combat the issue of illegal bottled water sales.
