The Maharashtra government on December 8 decided to rename the Mumbai international airport as Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, and to rechristen Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus by adding the word ‘Maharaj’ to it. The cabinet explained the decision was made because the Maratha warrior king deserved to be paid more respect. The move has, however, drawn mixed reactions. While some people have pointed out that frequent change in names is expensive as it costs the public money, others hoped that with the change in names, there also came better facilities. Mostly, people also did not fail to notice that the decision came just ahead of Mumbai civic body polls.

Twitter users wondered what the sudden decision was all about, and was it even necessary, after all, at this point when the people of the country were dealing with other issues like demonetisation of higher value currency notes. Many were at their sarcastic best, while they ‘lauded’ the Mumbai government and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the “life-changing” decision. Others wondered how many other public areas will be named after the warrior king. A Twitter user even asked how “glorifying monarchy” will suit a nation known as a democracy.

Here’s what the Twitter users had to say after the announcement.
@beastoftraal Step was necessary as people kept coming to CST to pay Central Sales Tax. Now CSMT won’t cause that confusion.

Earlier, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was known as Boribunder in the mid 1800s before it was renamed as Victoria Terminus (VT) and then Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in 1996. It is however continued to be known as VT. And it seems like some people aren’t really affected by the government’s decision because they are still going to call it VT!
It’s still VT lol https://t.co/P7GggQU9LJ
