It has been over a month since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetisation of high-value currency notes. The BJP government asserted that the move was to weed out black money, corruption and other illegal activities including terrorism. Now the older Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes’ value has been reduced to that of mere pieces of paper. But this person from Odisha claimed that electricity can be produced using the demonetised Rs 500 note! You heard us!

According to a report in the Deccan Chronicle, Lachman Dundi studies in Khariar College in Odisha’s Nuapada district, and has claimed that he can successfully generate electricity using the silicon present in these notes. An Intermediate science student, Dundi explained that when these notes are exposed to sunlight or other light forms, then the silicon content in the notes produce electricity. For this, a silicon plate is required to be attached on both the sides of the note.

According to the report, the note must be connected with an electric wire to a transformer, which will then generate 220 volts of electricity that can be used further. He also claimed that if this electricity is stored in a battery, then it can be used for 24 hours.

The son of a labourer couple in Khariar block’s Kotamal village, he manages to fund his studies by selling LED bulbs that he has assembled himself. In addition to this unusual idea, other ‘inventions’ that he has apparently claimed is possible, is operating cycle and generator through energy produced from urine.

While indianexpress.com could not independently verify if Dundi’s claims are true, a video uploaded on YouTube by a local news channel seems to show exactly what Dundi is claiming.
