The Bengalis of West Bengal have been fighting for a name change for years. After Calcutta was changed to Kolkata, the movement to go ahead and change the name of the state gathered momentum and force. After all, in the current context of the Indian boundary as well as its geographical location, the name does stick out as a confused sore thumb. So, after marinating the idea for years, the state cabinet finally adopted the resolution to rename the state on August 2.

West Bengal is just a couple of central approvals away from being rechristined as Bengal in English and either Bangla or Banga in Bengali. Once the resolution is ratified in a special meeting of the Assembly, it would be sent to the two Houses of Parliament.

The news of the proposed name change met with much amusement across the country. Sure, there were a couple of hurrahs and high fives, bongs will finally officially be bongs, and forth, there also some like Babul Supriyo who seemed a bit wary. Welcome the name change, but name should not be bongo, that is a musical instrument, he’s been quoted as saying.
