A Scottish content creator who spent weeks travelling through India’s biggest cities has finally revealed which place stole his heart, or rather, his stomach. Hugh, known online as Hugh Abroad, has built a loyal following by documenting his food adventures across India’s bustling streets.
Earlier this year, he covered seven major destinations, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi, before heading off to Pakistan. Now, during a Q&A series on Instagram where he’s comparing the two countries, a fan asked him to name the ultimate “food city.”
Surprisingly, Hugh crowned Bengaluru as India’s best food city, giving full credit to its unbeatable breakfast scene. He couldn’t stop raving about the classic combination of idli, dosa and filter coffee. “Dosas and idlis with filtered coffee… Out of this world,” he said, adding that Bengaluru offered the meals he “enjoyed the most.”
He went on to describe how “the dosas are like glass, they are so crispy,” while the idlis “melt in your mouth.” Just thinking about them made him hungry again as he confessed, “I’d kill for one right now, so good.”
His verdict sparked plenty of reactions. Many Instagram users agreed Bengaluru shines when it comes to breakfast, while others felt his judgment was based on too narrow an experience. Some urged him to explore more of India’s legendary food hubs.
One user wrote, “As a north Indian living in Bangalore, I agreed dosa idlis are the best breakfast.” Another user commented, “Filter coffee with dose is amazing for breakfast. But you should try other foods too around the country. Just basing it on breakfast sounds very reductive.”
A third person sarcastically commented, “Without visiting Punjab and UP this man sat down to make a video on best food.”
A fourth individual suggested, “You havent visited the main cities of india that are known for there food. Those 2 main cities are Luckhnow and Hyderabad. That should have been your priority 1 & 2 city.”
For Pakistan, Hugh chose Karachi as his favourite food city. And though Bengaluru took the crown in India, he didn’t shy away from praising Delhi either, especially the jalebi and rabri he tried there.
