Bihar boy averts major train accident in Samastipur

A 12-year-old boy averted a train accident showcasing his presence of mind in Bihar’s Samastipur after he saw a broken railway track. Mohammad Shahbaz flagged the train by using a red towel after he sensed a potential danger near Bhola Talkies Gumti on the Muzaffarpur railway line in the district.

Speaking to local reporters, Shahbaz shared details of how he and his friends saved the lives of hundreds of passengers aboard the Howrah-Kothgodam Express. “We saw the broken railway track on our way back home. Soon we saw a train approaching. I used my red towel to wave at the loco pilot. He saw me and stopped the train,” Shahbaz can be heard saying in a video, which has gone viral.

Indian Railways officials arrived at the spot and started the repair work after Shahbaz showed the broken tracks to the loco pilot, said reports.

Shared by X handle Samastipur Town, the video garnered over 41,000 views as several social media users hailed Shahbaz’s bravery. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “Well done Shahbaz.” Another user commented, “He deserves Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar.”

“This brave child should be honored with child bravery award at the national level,” the third user wrote.

Soon after the incident came to light, Shahbaz was honoured for his bravery. “The child who prevented a train accident in Samastipur with his intelligence was honored,” Samastipur Town wrote on X.

According to reports, railway officials reached the spot and started the repair work. Before Shabaz noticed the broken track, many trains including Amrapali Express, Mithila Express, Bagh Express, Ahmedabad Sabarmati Express, Samastipur-Muzaffarpur MEMU Special, New Delhi Clone Special, Vihar Sampark Kranti Super Fast Express, and Maurya Express passed through.
