Pune police impounded both vehicles, and launched legal action against those involved
Two sport utility vehicles (SUV) were seized by Pune police after a video showing them recklessly racing through a gated society in Wagholi went viral. The incident happened on Wednesday inside Nyati Elan society and has triggered a wave of concern over the safety of residents in such private communities.
The cars involved — a Mahindra Thar and a Mahindra Scorpio — were seen speeding along the narrow internal roads of the complex, endangering lives. Eyewitnesses claimed that when some residents tried to stop them, the drivers responded with verbal abuse and threats.
The footage, widely circulated online, led residents to lodge a formal complaint. In response, Pune police impounded both vehicles, and launched legal action against those involved.
In an update posted on X, police confirmed the crackdown and reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving. “Such behaviour will not be tolerated,” the X post said.

The video sparked a flurry of reactions online, with users applauding the swift response from the police. One user said, “Commendable. Need this action intent across the city.” Another wrote, “No one is bothered about the law and order! … They know they will have to write the essay on safe driving!.. they will be out in hrs and doing the same thing again!”
Commenting on the choice of vehicle, an X user said, “Had they taken science lessons, I bet they would have not have choosen the Thar for racing purpose.”
This is not the first time SUV owners have come under fire for reckless driving. On March 13, a 27-year-old man was arrested by Noida police, a day after he crashed his SUV — a Mahindr Thar again — into several vehicles at a busy stretch in Noida’s Sector 16, and drove away. The video of the incident had gone viral, prompting action from the police.
