Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman dedicated a post for legendary anime director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki after he was awarded this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award on Saturday. In a post on X, Sitharaman named his “masterpieces” and revealed she could watch his works “number of times.”
Sharing a news report in Japan Times, she wrote, “Co-founder of #StudioGhibli #HayaoMiyazaki gets the Ramon Magsaysay award. His masterpieces are “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service—can watch them any number of times. Anime have much for adults and Miyazaki serves them like a magician.”

Sitharaman’s post grabbed attention on social media, and several users expressed their astonishment over the finance minister’s love for anime. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “Wow didn’t expect this tweet.” Another user commented, “I never expected a government official, let alone a sitting minister, to talk about anime. But here we are. I was surprised, and I like it.”

Born in Tokyo, Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the most renowned filmmakers in the history of animation. He co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 and is also popular for his works like “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Laputa: Castle in the Sky,” and “Porco Rosso,” among others. His film “Princess Mononoke” was the first animated film to win the Japan Academy Film Prize for Picture of the Year.
Cut to 2024, Miyazaki has been honoured by Asia’s Nobel Prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award. The prestigious award was established in honour of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay and is given to figures for their notable contributions to Asia.
