A journalist from Punjab posted a video on a social media platform, showing three men sleeping inside an air-conditioned ATM of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Patiala.

“Scorching Heat Drives People to Seek Shelter in Bank ATM-#Patiala,” Gagandeep Singh posted on X along with the video sparking a conversation on the Internet.

In the video, the men can be seen sleeping on the floor, completely at ease, and oblivious to the world around them, as a small crowd gradually forms.

The video stirred up a conversation as people acknowledged the intensity of the heat driving everyone to seek shade and air conditioning, with some saying certain public areas such as ATMs should be off-limits. Several social media users also criticised the incident, questioning the absence of security measures and guards.

“Where is your ATM security guard? These drunkards are lying inside, if a woman needs to withdraw money then how will she go? Please take cognizance of the incident and take strict action @TheOfficialSBI @RBI,” read a user’s post loosely translated from Hindi.

SBI responded to the video as well. “We regret the inconvenience caused to you. Please share with us the ATM ID/CDM ID or exact location and code/name of the nearest branch to locate that ATM/CDM so that our concerned team can take proper cognizance of the issue,” said the bank.

“Punjab govt should take action to supply proper electricity during extreme heat. PSPCL have no plan,” said a user. A second user said, “Let them sleep!”.

Many users even tagged the official account of the Punjab Police and asked them to look into the matter.
