Kerala doctor treats catering workers at her wedding: ‘Just did what was needed’

Shirin is currently pursuing her first-year MD in Emergency Medicine at Valluvanad Hospital, Ottapalam. She gave both women basic first aid and advised them to seek further medical attention if necessary.

For the woman with the nosebleed, Shirin asked her to lean forward and pinch the soft part of her nose firmly for 10 to 15 minutes while breathing through her mouth. The other woman, who was feeling dizzy, was told to lie down and keep her legs elevated, according to PTI. “These are basic steps to take, giving first aid and then getting them to a hospital,” Shirin said.

What happened was captured on video and shared online, where it quickly drew attention. But for Shirin, there was nothing unusual about stepping in when someone needed help.

“It’s definitely not a big deal. If we see someone collapse or faint on the road, it’s in our subconscious mind to react. If it’s something we can do, we do it right there and then shift them to a hospital,” she said.

The doctor also spoke about why basic first-aid knowledge can be crucial, especially when professional medical help is not immediately available. She stressed the importance of acting quickly in emergencies and highlighted early CPR, noting that delays in providing first aid can greatly reduce a person’s chances of survival.

Shirin said she had no idea that someone was filming her while she was helping the two women. She only found out after the clip began making the rounds online.

“I saw it; many people forwarded it to me. But I hadn’t noticed anyone recording a video at the time. It was simply our duty, nothing more,” she said.

Her husband, Dr Rijaz, is also pursuing postgraduate medical studies and is specialising in Orthopaedics in Andhra Pradesh. He said their training plays a role in how quickly they respond in such situations. “Emergency specialists tend to have a quicker reflex to react to such situations,” Rijaz said.

The video also prompted praise from social media users. “Honestly, this is so sweet. She was literally at her own wedding, but the second someone needed help, she didn’t hesitate and just stepped in. That says a lot about the kind of person she is. Huge respect to her,” one user wrote.
