An IndiGo aircraft was greeted by a water canon salute as it arrived at the newly integrated terminal at Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, to mark the start of operations. The terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2.

In a video shared by ANI, the aircraft can be seen slowly manoeuvering through the runway. The water canon shoots water in the air the moment the aircraft takes a turn.

With more than 1,71,000 views, the video accumulated several reactions with one saying, “Start the flower cannon salute.” Another user commented, “This trend must change. Why waste so much water for this nonsense?”

“Water is much needed in other parts of the country and here the govt is using it for cheering. Ask those who stand in the line for hours to fill their drums,” a third user reacted.

The new terminal building at Tiruchirappalli International Airport has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 1,100 crore. It is a two-level facility that can accommodate more than 44 lakh passengers and around 3,500 passengers during rush hour. “This will be an important addition to Chennai’s infrastructure. It will boost connectivity and also benefit the local economy,” PM Modi wrote on X.

The new terminal’s design includes traditional features like Kolam, a form of rangoli or decorative art found at the entrance of south Indian homes.
