A video showing the famous Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar strewn with piles of garbage has gone viral. On May 23, thousands of devotees gathered in Haridwar to take a dip in the Ganga and offer prayers on Buddha Purnima.

Shared by an X handle @askbhupi on Wednesday, the video begins showing a pile of plastic on the steps by the ghat. The person making the video walks ahead, showing how the entire stretch is littered with plastic, clothes and residues of items used for pooja. Devotees can be seen on the steps, some offering prayers.

“Video of Har ki Pauri in Haridwar. The government cannot do everything, but aren’t people aware that they can pick up the plastic they brought with them and throw them in the dustbin,” said a rough translation of @askbhupi’s post in Hindi.

With over 17,000 views on X, the video has left social media users infuriated. While a section of users slammed the devotees, others blamed the government. Reacting to it, a user wrote, “People do not have faith in the Ganga river, they all come here just to show off. The Ganga river needs to be clean for bathing but they do not want to take care of the cleanliness of the ghats. The hypocrites should be reprimanded..” Another user wrote, “India is a great country but Indians are the worst when it comes to cleanliness and civic sense.”

“It is true that the government cannot do everything, but my brother, why does this stupid government charge money for everything? When the municipal corporation does not have to do any work, then why is tax collected?” a third user commented.
