The year 2016 has been a memorable year for reasons good and bad. The year will definitely go down in history as the one in which old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were demonetised, and as a result of which the ‘aam’ junta had to face massive troubles to lay hands on their own money. It’s also the year when cult figure Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa passed away and the political environment in the country, by and large, remained charged wherein words like ‘nationalism’, ‘patriotism’ and ‘anti-national’ were often used in public discourse.
Comedian Vir Das has summed up the year for us and thousands of people seem to agree with him because his post has gone viral with over 3,000 shares and 10,000 likes, at the time of writing. Here’s what he shared in a picture that read. “So what you’re saying is…. Homosexuality is still illegal. We have banned surrogacy. Pollution is at its worst. We are arresting people in movie theatres. Normal people are standing in lines unable to reach their own money. Rich people have ample access to money. We are beating up painters, slashing films, threatening artists. But on the bright side…. Laddoos?”
The comedian clearly took a dig at the laddoos that Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit has directed its officials to give to families in order to “thank them for their patience”. The party has specifically asked the party workers to give one laddoo per family. He also mocked the recent SC ruling which made playing of National Anthem in movie halls across the country mandatory, following which it has been reported that 12 people have been arrested in Southern states for not standing while it was played.
