Traffic on the Bhavnagar-Somnath highway in Gujarat briefly halted after an Asiatic lion was spotted walking across the road. The big cat was seen crossing a bridge, prompting cars, trucks, and motorbikes to stop and wait 15 minutes for it to pass. A video, recorded from a car that had stopped on the opposite side of the road, captured the incident in Amreli district.
In the viral video, the lion walks down the slope beside the highway, heading towards a temple.

Earlier, six lions and lionesses were spotted in a residential area late at night in the district. A CCTV camera captured the moment when a herd of cattle was chased by the lions and lionesses on the street. Recently, a lion was seen blocking traffic on a bridge near Dudhala village.
Several lions have been injured and a few have lost their lives on the Bhavnagar-Somnath Highway.
The Asiatic lion, also known as the Persian lion, is native to the Gir forest in Gujarat. It is one of the seven subspecies of lions found around the world. The Gir forest is the only habitat for these lions, making it their exclusive home. Geologists believe that the small population of Asiatic lions in India is a result of their migration from Persia and Baluchistan.
