In 2019, a bright green snake named after Salazar Slytherin from Harry Potter was found in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the discovery on his official X account on July 8.

In his X post, he posted pictures of the snake, and wrote, “Guess what, kids? Kaziranga just found a real-life Harry Potter snake! Meet the super cool Salazar Pit Viper: it’s green like magic and has a funky red-orange stripe on its head. Isn’t nature awesome? “

The snake was first sighted during a field expedition in the forests of the Pakke Tiger Reserve in 2019, researchers in Arunachal Pradesh first sighted this venomous snake named ‘Trimeresurus salazar’, now commonly known as Salazar’s pit viper.

One user wrote, “Assam is blessed with some stunning wildlife.” Another user said, “ Yes but snakes are scary.” A third user commented, “Wow! Beautiful coloring!” Many users even corrected Sarma, pointing out that the red-orange stripe is actually on the tail of the snake, not on its head.

In J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Salazar Slytherin is one of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry founders alongside Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. He is distinguished for his mastery of Parseltongue, the language of serpents, and the snake remains a potent symbol of Slytherin House, which he established at Hogwarts.
