Members of the Regional Council of Veneto dealt with an ironical situation when moments after they rejected a plan to combat climate change, their office was flooded.

Pictures of the flooded office, which is located on the Grand Canal, in Venice have gone viral on social media, bringing the focus back to the topic of the ongoing climate change.

Andrea Zanoni, the Democratic party’s deputy chairman of the council’s environment committee, shared several pictures of the flooded office along with a caption that read, “The League of Zaia votes against our amendments on the contrast to climate change and after two minutes the room advise is submerged by the waters.”

According to The Guardian, as the Veneto councillors debated the issues regarding climate emergency in Ferro Fini Palace on Tuesday, residents of Venice continued to battle with high water levels occurring due to the recurrent floods in the city. Following the debate, the regional council’s majority rightwing parties rejected the suggested amendments made to fight the climate change crisis in 2020 proposed by the centre-left Democratic party, the news website reported.

Viral on social media, the pictures have triggered angry reactions online with many slamming the politicians for their callous attitude towards the climate crisis.

“The irony. Venice City Council Floods Moments After Rejecting Climate Change Proposals,” tweeted a user, while another wrote, “Venice Council rejected the climate change plan and then, Venice was flooded. If you still confess the climate change ain’t real, I don’t know what to say, mate.”

While climate change is among the top urgent issues being discussed among leaders around the world, it is yet to catch the required momentum.
