It is no secret that finding love is not an easy task. Sometimes people get supremely lucky and find the one they are looking for, but other times, they have have to wait for a long, long time. While waiting to fall in love with someone is always an option, it is perhaps about time that we begin loving ourselves too. And if you wondering how to go about it, then you can take cues from an Italian woman, who married herself in a grand ceremony. Yes, you read that right.

According to a report by BBC, Laura Mesi broke tradition and got hitched to herself in attendance of 70 guests and bridesmaids. “I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves,” the 40-year-old fitness model said.  “You can have a fairytale even without the prince,” she added. Although the ceremony is not legally valid, it has set an important precedent. Mesi has become one of those who endorse “sologamy”, or self-marriage.

For Mesi, the idea to marry herself came when her 12-year long relationship ended. “I told (my) friends and family that if I had not found my soul-mate by my 40th birthday I would marry myself,” she said to La Repubblica newspaper as quoted by BBC. “If one day I find a man with whom I can plan a future I’ll be happy, but my happiness does not depend on him,” she added. “This is my fairytale wedding – only without a Prince Charming,” she said while speaking to The Telegraph. “Everyone celebrates getting together with someone and becoming married, but there’s no milestone in society that celebrates escaping something awful or returning to your own happiness and contentment,” she added.
