Right after an excited Malala Yousafzai posted on her Twitter account about how she was enjoying her first lecture at the Oxford University, a photo of what many claimed to have been that of the Pakistani activist wearing jeans went viral. While it is yet to be confirmed by verified sources that it was indeed Yousafzai, the strong resentment and trolling that many on the Internet resorted to, because they couldn’t stand a 20-year-old choosing to wear what she wished to, reached dangerous levels. The discussion and the unwarranted attention that the viral photo received on social media also generated debates about how the general public is, in fact, nobody to dictate a woman what to wear and what not to. Contributing to this debate, a Pakistani comedian Junaid Akram also took to Twitter as a response to the trolls.
“Elon Musk naya rocket bana raha hai, hum abhi tak baith ke decide kar rahe hai aurat ne kya pehna hai (Elon Musk is making another rocket and here we are having heated arguments about what a woman is wearing. Who are we to do that?),” asked Akram in the video that is being praised widely.
Before you see Akram’s response, this is the photo that generated the furore on the Internet.
