It’s not often that you see a tribute performance being lambasted. More so when it’s someone like musical legend Madonna paying tribute to yet another musical legend Prince. But it seems the pop singer’s rendition of the ‘Purple Rain’ artiste at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards failed to connect with fans. And they took to Twitter to convey their ire.

Wearing a shimmering lilac-coloured suit, the 57-year-old singer took to the stage at the end of the evening and sang ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ followed by ‘Purple Rain’ as she held the hand of surprise guest Stevie Wonder.

According to critics, the ‘Vogue’ singer’s interpretation was full of languor and devoid of any solo guitar, which has been a key element to the late Grammy-winning singer’s collection. The haters even added that the performance was nowhere near to typical ‘Prince performance’, rather it was “unique brand of danceable funk.”

British singer Dave Stewart of Eurythmics took to Twitter to initiate the criticism and wrote, “Please don’t have Madonna attempt a Prince song.”

But he wasn’t the only one.

However, not everyone disliked the performance. Questlove, who helped to orchestrate the Prince section of the BBMA, appreciated her in a series of tweets. The Roots drummer and the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallow bandleader said, “Every Prince rendition will not be a life changing orgasmic xperience. Just to SING his work is brave enough. Again feeling are on high.”

And finally, Madonna herself responded to all the criticism she has received on social media. She posted on Instagram saying, “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age Gender or skin Color. If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever.”
