Considered one of the most eerie times of the year, Halloween is celebrated on October 31 every year. It is believed by many that the roots of the Halloween festivals date back to ancient Celtic harvest festivals. The Celtics observed their new year on November 1 and as the days grew shorter and the nights became longer they marked November 1 as the end of summer. This beginning of the winter was considered ominous and was associated with death. It was also believed that in the night preceding the new year, the demarcations between natural and supernatural would get blurred and a ushering of ghosts, known as Samhain was celebrated.
The day, over the years, has undergone some changes and as it came to America people started dressing up as ghosts or in their most grotesque best. There is also a tradition of going around neighbourhood and perform what is known as ‘trick and treat’. This age-old tradition dates back to the time when rich people would donate some food to the poor on condition that the latter would pray for them. At present the tradition has become extremely famous and prevalent as children often dress up in the most scary way possible and collect sweets or something else from the neighbours.
