The civil war in Syria that started four and a half years ago has left innumerable people homeless and subject to unimaginable misery. Millions of people have fled to Europe and other parts of the world to seek asylum but it’s not what they call home.
Most refugees have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan where they struggle to make ends meet. Children are forced to quit their school and fend for the families; women who are travelling for days at length to escape Syria do not even have a roof on their heads, let alone privacy to manage their menstrual blood flow.
To catch attention of the world on internet, a fake fortune-telling website called betagoogle.com has been created. This is part of a global campaign to spread awareness about Syrian refugees, asking people to “take a moment to think of their future”.
As soon as one types a question on betagoogle.com to answer about their future, it takes you to another page which informs the reader about how important it is to really do something about the Syrian crisis in whichever little way possible.
“With this project we want to create awareness. We need structural solutions on political level for this growing European problem. Please feel free to donate your time, money or love and spread the word,” reads the webpage.
The other options on the website allows the user to share the campaign on social networking websites Facebook and Twitter. On the right-hand side, there is a Magic ball showing the number of refugees (starting from 1) increasing while you are on the website, to emphasize the gravity of the crisis.
This project doesn’t seem to be associated with Google. The search engine, however, did launch “Crisis Info Hub” on October 23 to provide refugees with relevant information for their journey.
