TIME magazine released its cover and Person of the Year for 2016 on Wednesday (December 7) and it astonished the world (well, kinda). The magazine named US president-elect and billionaire businessman Donald Trump as its choice. Although there continues to be much uproar about the choice, the explanation by one of the world’s most prestigious magazines seems perfectly apt.
Undoubtedly, Trump created more news than anyone else in 2016 and was the most talked about person in the world – for not only his shocking election victory but also for his unabashed, racists and sexist remarks. And personifying the popular adage – Like it (him), or hate it (him) but you can’t ignore it (him).
WATCH | US-President Elect Donald Trump Named TIME’s Person Of The Year 2016
Within few minutes of Trump’s name being announced as the Person of the Year by TIME, Netizens took over the virtual world to express their views, no holds barred.
While many were shocked and lamented on how with all negative statements he could be given the title, many users started trolling the president-elect. To be fair, the magazine even trolled Trump in their own way. On the cover, which shows the wealthy politician seated on an elegant chair in an expensive black suit and red tie, the tag line reads, “Donald Trump, President of the divided states of America”. Well, they may not have used an unflattering double-chin photo, but that didn’t stop them for taking a dig.
“To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Trump told Matt Lauer of the Today Show in an interview after the announcement. However, Trump expressed his displeasure with the magazine’s choice of words to describe him. He reiterated his stance by saying, “I think putting ‘divided’ is snarky,” Trump said. Interestingly, this is apparently Trump’s 10th time on the cover of TIME.
Many people also highlighted how Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Putin were also named TIME Person of the Year and the similarities between their ‘infamous’ remarks or deeds.
