Millions resonated with Ross (from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.) when he said, “Why would anyone pay someone to scar their body for life?” in the episode where Rachel decides to get a tattoo. Once controversial, tattoos have evolved into a widely accepted form of self-expression, whether as a tribute to a loved one, a symbol of personal growth, or a way to commemorate life events. Cybersigilism, a new tattoo trend, is all the rage now, with celebrities like Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and others jumping on the bandwagon, and inspiring Gen Zs.
What is a cybersigilism tattoo?
Cybersigilism tattoo features thin black lines with edgy patterns, making it look like veins. “These tattoos often incorporate technological or mystical elements, creating a unique aesthetic that’s modern and ancient,” Syndey Smith, a tattoo artist, told PopSugar, a website dedicated to Gen Zs and pop culture.
In simpler words, cybersiglism has been referred to as Gen Z’s version of the “tribal tattoo”. Small tattoos might cost up to $100 (over Rs 8,000, approximately), while larger patterns can cost as much as $500 (nearly Rs 50,000 approximately), according to PopSugar. On Tuesday, the New York Post shared a video of several TikTokers hopping onto the trend and getting cybersigilism tattoos in black and red inks. The video garnered significant traction, kindling a discussion on the tattoo culture. “Gen Z!! As someone who got a tribal tattoo. DON’T DO IT!! You will regret this. I promise you,” a user reacted. “Am totally horrified at the sight of good looking young people covering themselves in tattoos. I am certain most will regret it in the future,” another user wrote.
“It’s so ugly, it’s beyond words. It looks like varicose veins. Disgusting when you think of it. This generation is absolutely useless,” a third user commented.
While many people disapprove of it, popstars Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa did not shy away from flaunting the ‘artwork’. The Birds of a Feather singer inked a black typhoon-looking pattern down her spine while Lipa got a small thorny rose tattoo at the top of her arm.
Many tattoo artists believe that cybersigilism is the amalgamation of technology and ancient symbols, which satisfies GenZ’s aesthetics. “In this fast-paced, tech-driven world, people are always looking for ways to stand out and tell their stories. Cybersigilism tattoos give them that canvas, letting them show off how their beliefs and experiences are tangled up with our digital lives,” Smith told PopSugar.
