During a display of stunt planes at the Portuguese city of Beja on Sunday, two planes collided in the sky. The Portuguese Air Force (PAF) reported that one of the planes crashed and burst into fire, leading to the death of its Spanish pilot.
The video was shared on X by @fl360aero with the caption, “Two Yak-52 aircrafts of the Spanish-Portuguese Yakstars formation team collided during the Beja Air Show, Portugal. Unfortunately, one aircraft crashed resulting in death of pilot. The other pilot, Sucre managed to land his plane. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m.”
According to reports, the PAF, which was in charge of the event at an airfield in Beja, 180 km south of Lisbon, mentioned that the crash occurred with planes from the YAK STARS aerobatic team. This team is made up of pilots from both Portugal and Spain and is recognized by the PAF as the “largest civilian aerobatic team in southern Europe”.
Air Force captain Patricia Fernandes confirmed that “one of the pilots, who was Spanish, passed away, and another pilot suffered injuries”. Following the crash, the PAF chose to cancel the Beja AirShow, which is known as the biggest air festival in Portugal.
