Probably, there are very few of us who have not had a bad experience with auto-rickshaw drivers who refuse to take us to our destinations. And we have often discovered that nothing, no amount of haggling or arguing, can make them budge from their decision.
While they smirk at their triumph, we are left to struggle with our misery. Many a times, we either consider asking for police help or, defeated, move on to a different auto.
But C Christine Fair had some different ideas. This American lady has come up with a new technique to make such drivers mend their ways. One day, when an auto-rickshaw driver refused to take her to Charminar in Hyderabad with the meter on, she decided to take revenge by sitting inside the auto and making a video clip of the whole incident.
But mind you, this is no ordinary video clip.
In the video, that has gone viral, Christine says as she is free the whole day, she can sit and if any passenger comes, she can entertain them with her songs.
Next thing you know, she starts singing, “mujhe neend na aaye, chain na aaye…” and when the driver gives a surprised and shocked look, she instantly switches to a new song.
Realising that his customer won’t go away easily, the driver offers to take her to her destination with the meter turned on.
Christine later posted the video on YouTube saying, “This is how to handle a scoundrel taxi or autowallah who either doesn’t want to take you to your destination (for whatever fazul bahanna he offers) or use the meter. It’s taken me some 20 years to figure out this technique to get an auto or a taxi driver in India to take me to my destination with the meter on. You can see this man has been utterly defeated. I need to carry with me some song sheets. Note that I have used this technique now in several cities. It has worked every time. No need to get mad. Just toss away your shame…and wait out the miscreant. I suspect it will work elsewhere in South Asia.”
Thanks Christine, for showing us the way.
