There is no denying the immense fanatical support that former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa commanded. The love and respect for the actor-turned-politician was evident in the way people across the state, especially Chennai, mourned her death on December 5, after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was 68.

In the latest display of reverence and love to their beloved Amma, Chennaiites have come together and made a 68kg idli moulded in the shape of Jayalithaa’s face at the city’s famous Marina Beach. Pictures of the idli tribute have been widely shared on social media platforms, much to the amusement of many.

This may be an unusual way of expressing their love, but it’s not the first time that the late politician’s followers done something like this. From inking tattoos on their bodies to one person once actually nailing himself to a cross demanding Amma be reinstated as the state’s chief minister, people’s obsession with the AIADMK former chief has seen and touched bizarre levels of craziness.

According to reports, 77 people died of grief after news of Jayalalithaa’s passing was announced. The Tamil Nadu government, now led by O Panneerselvam, has declared a relief package of Rs 3 lakh to each of the families of those who died of grief. In this respect, the state and its politicians are unique in the kind of obsessive fan following displayed.

Lately, though, much has been amiss within the party itself as well as the state government, as the power tussle between Panneerselvam and Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala and their respective supporters continues.
