Facebook has introduced a new 3D Photo feature, which will convert Portrait shots taken on an iPhone into a three dimensional format. The photos shared via this mode on Facebook are interactive with a three dimensional effect. At the moment, 3D Photos can only be shared and created from an iPhone. But users can experience them on all platforms, be it desktop or mobile or the Android app.

According to comments posted by the official Facebook 360 page, the 3D photo creation is only possible on iPhones which have dual cameras. This includes the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS. The iPhone XR is not mentioned on the list, though it does have Portrait mode, but no dual-camera at the back. However, it appears that the feature is support on iPhone XR also.

This is a phased roll out and not everyone will immediately see the 3D Photo sharing option in their Facebook app on iOS. The feature is not yet available on Android phones, even those with dual-rear cameras. Facebook is tapping into the Portrait photos, which iOS stores in a separate folder.

The new feature will take some time to roll out on all devices over the coming weeks. Users also need to make sure they are using the latest version of Facebook to create this effect.

Here are steps to follow on uploading 3D Photos on Facebook

First like the Facebook 360 page, and then restart the Facebook app on your iPhone. We noticed that doing this ensured the 3D Photo option appears in the list, and tested this out on an iPhone XS. However, not everyone will get the feature by following this step.

After you have restarted the app, start by creating a new post on Facebook. Just tap on the ‘What’s on your mind?’ space. The 3D Photos should show in the list of options. After Watch Party, Photo/Video, Tag People, Feeling/Activity/Sticker, the 3D Photo option appears.

Tap on 3D Photo, and it will automatically open all Portrait photos you have taken on your iPhone. Just hit upload. Facebook will then take a few seconds to convert it into a 3D Photo. Once that is done, just hit share, add a caption and your 3D Photo will be uploaded.

Once the photo is created, you will notice that you can interact with it. 3D Photos works fine with Portraits of humans, dogs on the iPhone.

Facebook has not confirmed when this will be coming to Android phones.
