HTC might not be doing wonders in the smartphone market, but that hasn’t stopped the Taiwanese company from launching six smartphones in one go in India, including its 2016 flagship – HTC 10. HTC argues the new lineup has something for everyone with smartphones starting from Rs 13,990 and going all the way up to Rs 52,990 for HTC 10.

HTC has already developed for a following for its Desire range among Indian consumers and now it is attempting to offer a One series device in the similar price bracket.

HTC One X9 is a dual-SIM smartphone, priced at Rs 25,990. While HTC 10 will compete with the likes of LG G5, and Samsung S7; the HTC One X9 will have to fight against the other options in the price-range: the newly launched OnePlus 3, Xiaomi Mi 5, etc.

HTC One X9 bears a design similar to what we saw on the HTC One series. The Carbon Grey variant that we got for review looks quite premium. HTC One X9 comes with a 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. It’s got a beautiful full-metal body, and runs Android Marshmallow. There’s no fingerprint scanner on the smartphone though, which is a let-down at this price-point.

What is good?

It is no secret HTC is known for making good-looking smartphones; and the company is continuing this legacy with One X9. This is a beautiful looking smartphone, and definitely one of the best I have ever seen in this price-range.

Its got a 5.5-inch full HD display and I’m quite happy with it. It is vivid, and the icons are sharp Its got a 5.5-inch full HD display and I’m quite happy with it. It is vivid, and the icons are sharp

A small camera unit and flash is neatly placed on the top left corner on the back, micro-USB slot is at the bottom; and a 3.5 mm headphone jack at the top.

One X9 has a 5.5-inch full HD display and I’m quite happy with it. It’s vivid, and the icons are sharp. The great thing about the display is that it’s easy to use, even in bright sunlight.

The primary camera in One X9 is quite impressive, especially in low-light settings. The pictures are clear, and the colour reproduction is accurate. The reds and pinks might a bit over-saturated, but they do not bleed. Pictures do not appear grainy, even when clicked in low-light, which is a big plus. However, this one doesn’t come with HTC’s UltraPixel technology.

HTC One X9 offers a smooth multitasking experience; be it watching videos or playing games; the smartphone can take almost anything. The screen however froze for me once while playing Asphalt 8. Also, the same app crashed more than once, which ideally shouldn’t happen. However, I did not face issues while browsing multiple tabs on the smartphone, or watching movies on it.

Heating is not a major issue with the phone. Yes, it did get a bit warm while playing Asphalt 8 for 20 minutes, but that was it.

The sound quality is a big plus with HTC One X9. The calls were crystal clear and loud. Playing music and watching movies, even without earphones is a great experience thanks to the BoomSound support.

What is not good?

HTC One X9 lacks a good grip, it slipped quite often from my hands. I had to be really careful with the smartphone, which definitely is a concern. Get a cover, if you plan on buying this one.

The front camera fails to deliver in low-light, as the pictures look downright grainy. It does a decent job otherwise. HTC One X9 doesn’t come with a fingerprint scanner, and at this price-point; we sure expect one.

Verdict

HTC One X9 is a premium-looking device, and comes with decent specs. And the company is clearly targeting the high-end market with this one.

Smartphones like Oppo F1 Plus, Xiaomi Mi 5 and the newly-launched OnePlus 3 provide direct competition to One X9; but HTC is targeting its loyal user base here.

Buy HTC One X9 if you want a phone that performs well, has a good rear camera and comes with a brand value attached to it.
