Until now, the Marathon series of smartphones from Gionee focused entirely on providing bigger batteries. They were first to introduce a smartphone with a massive 5,000 mAh battery in the form of Marathon M3, last year. The Marathon M4, launched a couple of months back, was a minor upgrade. However, the latest Marathon M5 is an all-rounder.
Gionee has ensured that the Marathon M5 is not just all about its massive 6,020 mAh battery. It is a complete package in itself. Here is our review.
Gionee Marathon M5
The Chinese smartphone brand is taking the Indian market seriously and is slowly aligning itself to the needs of the consumers. Gionee recently announced its domestic manufacturing and also committed to making all its smartphones in the country by next year. The Marathon M5 is well-balanced smartphone in terms of hardware specs, Android Lollipop-based Amigo UI based and battery. And the pricing seems just right.

Price: Rs 17,999
What is good?
A smartphone powered by a 6,020 mAh battery has to offer a great battery life. And the Marathon M5 does. While using the smartphone, I could never fully charge the smartphone, as it takes time. Also, I never ran out of battery. I easily managed an entire day with a little over 30 per cent battery life.
You can even manage around four to five hours with just two per cent battery life with the Extreme Mode on. If you fully charge the device, you can expect over two days. You can even squeeze in three days of normal usage, if you are not a heavy user.
Gionee is offering ample storage options on its Marathon M5. Apart from the 32GB internal memory (around 26GB available), you can expand the storage capacity up to 128GB via microSD card.
While the spec sheet might not boast much, but the display is smooth. The focus on the overall experience has definitely paid off. The device can easily cater to games, multi-tasking and more. During my usage, I did not face much of lags or app crashes. On the performance front, you should not have much to complain.
The display quality, though it is not Full HD, is actually good. On the camera front, the device offers a lot of software tweaks. The results are decent.
The Amigo UI, will take some time to get used to, that is if you haven’t used a Gionee smartphone before. But it offers everything you need to have from the start. The experience will please you.
What is not that good?
It weighs over 210 grams and is heavy. But don’t blame Gionee as the device packs in two massive 3,010 mAh batteries. While the camera is capable of delivering good results, it is slow. The auto focus feature is not the fastest which makes shooting moving objects difficult.
At a price of Rs 17,999, the Gionee Marathon M5 is a good 5.5-inch Android phablet for those who wants performance without compromising on battery life.
