Smart lighting is not something new. While controlling lights with your smartphone sounds really cool, the price becomes a major deterrent for consumers. Delhi-based tech startup Cube26 wants to change this mindset with its IOTA Lite. It’s a simple 7W LED bulb which is powered by Bluetooth 4.0 and has energy efficient Toshiba LED and Texas Instruments microprocessor.
This bulb can connect to Android and iOS devices via an app, which enables the user to change colour, luminosity, switch it off or on and more. Up to seven bulbs can be synced together with the app. You can set the bulb to whatever colour you want. Also, tune it while playing music on your phone and change the colour theme according to the weather. Or, if your smartphone is on silent mode and the bulb will alert you for incoming calls.
The IOTA Lite bulb sounds really exciting, but should you consider buying especially spending Rs 1,899 for just one LED bulb is still a bit too much for many.
Price: Rs 1,899 (for one bulb); Introductory offer price is Rs 1,499. Available only on Flipkart.
The bulb comes with a connector. Screw the bulb with the connect and place it on the holder and switch it on. The bulb will glow with the default white colour. On your smartphone, download the IOTA Lite app from Google Play Store or Apple app store. The app will prompt you to connect via Bluetooth and connects directly to the bulb. The setup is very simple.
Once the bulb is connected, you can start by changing the colour of the light selecting a colour from the app. The app can be also used as a remote to switch the bulb on or off. However, remember to keep the power source of the bulb on.
What can it do?
-You can switch the bulb on or off from the app.
-You can change the colour of the light through voice commands. Just speak Red, Blue or Yellow to change the colour of bulb.
-Change the luminosity of the bulb. You can adjust the brightness as per your needs. Note that the maximum brightness of one bulb is not equivalent to that of a standard tube light or CFL bulb.
-There is a music mode from which the bulb can be synced to the music. The bulb will change colour and will glow as per the beats of the music. You will have to download the app called Rhythm Play to sync your music with the native app.
-The app comes with several presets like reading mode, party mode, strobe, etc. These presets can be used to make the bulb function accordingly. You can also create your very own custom mode by choosing colours and transitions.
-The bulb can be used to alert you of incoming calls, SMSes or YouTube videos as well. You can also configure the bulb to react according to the weather. So, if you want strobe lighting effect when it is raining outside, the bulb will automatically do so.
What is good?
It is the cheapest smart bulb you can buy at present. At the given price, the IOTA Lite offers excellent value for money. If you are someone who loves to party indoors or prefer lighting up your room according to your mood, then the IOTA Lite a must buy for you. Being an LED bulb, you can expect the light to be power efficient.
What is not that good?
While the app does a good job, Cube26 needs to work on it. Sometimes, the app doesn’t respond well. Also, the music mode needs to be improved. Sometimes the light doesn’t behave according to the beats. Also, it simply changes colours without much effects. We would love to have strobe effects while playing club songs.
The IOTA Lite will definitely make your guests stare at it in awe. It is a great buy for someone who wants to make their rooms lively. At this price, it is definitely a must-buy, given that the party season is just arriving. Also, the closest rival from Philips costs much more.
