Looking for songs on YouTube Music just became much easier as the music streaming platform has rolled out a new AI feature that lets users find the songs that they want to hear by humming the tune or singing a few words.
The feature known as ‘sound search’ or ‘hum to search’ can be used by tapping on the search bar and clicking on a button with the waveform symbol. Doing this pulls up a screen that lets you hum or play a beat of the song you’re looking for, according to a report by 9to5Google.
In May, YouTube Music’s AI song recognition feature was made available to select Android users and then rolled back. However, the feature was reportedly launched for both Android and iOS users worldwide on Monday, July 15.
Evidently, this feature is mainly for those users who don’t know the name or lyrics of the song that’s stuck in their head but can only remember its vague details.
However, if you want to look for song playlists that are best suited to your tastes or mood, YouTube Music is reportedly testing out another generative AI feature called conversational radio. It lets users access customised radio stations by describing the type of songs that they want to hear such as “catchy pop choruses” or “upbeat pop anthems.”

Only accessible to select YouTube Premium users in the US, the conversational radio feature will appear as a card saying “Ask for music any way you like” on the home feed, according to TechCrunch. Tapping the card will reportedly display a user interface screen on which users can enter a prompt or pick one that’s suggested.
AI’s impact on music streaming
Online platforms are increasingly being upgraded with generative AI features and music streaming apps are no different. Besides YouTube Music, other big players such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer are also looking to leverage generative AI to create playlists that are tailored to a user’s music choices. It could allow users to personalise their listening experience by entering prompts to listen to a specific song, artist, or music genre.
